Humberto Rodríguez Fernández

Calixto Evaristo Prisciano y Santa Fortunata "Berto" Rodríguez Fernández was born on 14 October 1909 in the city of Pinar del Río, in at his home in finca "La Flor del Carmen." He was baptized Humberto Calixto Evaristo on 26 February 1911, at the Cathedral of Pinar del Río. The godparents were Manuel Maragoto and Edelmira Fernández.

His father died before he was eleven years old. The family moved to La Habana and Humberto lived some time with his oldest sister María. Learned the carpentry trade and to work with rattan.

He married Nieves Porto Moreno at the Vedado Parish, on 24 July 1937. Had two children:J

  1. Fanny Adela
  2. Humberto Segundo

He established at La Habana, in partnership with Manuel Sánchez Reina y Benjamín Gorgis, La Selecta, located first at Belascoaín street, across from the building of Artes y Oficios, later moved to San Rafael 712, between Marqués González and Lucena, telephone U-6421. The founded also a furniture factory to produce not only what they sold at La Selecta, but also as a wholesaler for the rest of the country, located first at on the second story of a wooden building, owned by Miguel Font, at Patria street, half a block from the Estadio del Cerro, the AAA baseball stadium of La Habana, later built a new building (the last contracted job of Manuel Porto Porto), at 14 street, between Tejar and Pocito, Lawton, La Habana.

He left Cuba into exile in Miami, on 13 October 1960. In Miami he worked as a carpenter at York furniture, a furniture factory located at 46th street at the corner of 37th Avenue NW.

After Nieves died on 7 August 1972, he lived many years with his son Humberto and daughter-in-law Miriam, in 11520 SW 98 Court, Kendall, Miami, where he died at 2 AM 10 September 1997.
