Manuel Porto Porto

Manuel Porto Porto was born in San Pedro de Parada, Municipality of La Estrada, Pontevedra, Diocesis of Santiago, La Coruña, Galicia, España, on 29 September 1877, was baptized on the little church in the village, founded as a monastery in the year 1025.

He married first in Galicia and had a daughter, Dolores Porto Mejides.

He travelled to La Habana in 1901, when he was 24 years old. He was a mason, dominated the art of building stone buildings, worked as a contractor for such jobs. He prospered with big government projects, like the Palacio Presidencial and the Capitol. He also made the monument to José Miguel Gómez, located at Avenida de los Presidentes.

While remodeling the Catedral de La Habana, building the entrance cupula, under the engineer Eugenio Rainieri, he had difficulties holding the big stones used, due to their weight. Manuel Porto Porto entered into a contract with Cardenal Arteaga, for a price of $3,000, payable at the conclusion of the project. He did his job and everything came out well; Later, The Cardenal asked for a discount, which caused him such indignation that he was sick with fever for three days.

His last job was the furniture factory Humberto Rodríguez Fernández, Manolo Sánchez Reina y Benjamín Gorgis, at calle 14, entre Tejar y Pocito, Lawton, La Habana.

While working at a jobsite in Aguacate, Matanzas, he met Micaela Moreno Menéndez, who lived across the street. He married her in Aguacate on 11 August 1907, registered at Tomo 4, Folio 416, Aguacate, Matanzas. He was 29 and she was 14.

They had six children:

  1. Miguel en 1909.
  2. Fernando en 1911.
  3. Lucía en 1913.
  4. Nieves en 1915.
  5. Margot en 1917.
  6. Manuel en 1922.

He became a widower an married the third and last time with Manuela Porto Mejides, daughter of José and María, a cousin he grought from España to help at the home. With her he had José Luis Porto Porto, born on December 22, 1927.

During his later years he lived at Nieves home, later at a house he bouht at El Cotorro, a small town in Habana Province, with Lucía and José Luis; later on with Lucía, first in Calle Reyes in Luyanó later at Calle 25 número 1105, entre 6 y 8, Vedado, La Habana, where he died on 3 August 1961. he died of Parkinsons' disease.
